World Religions and the Apocalypse

For behold, the Lord will come in fire. And His chariots like the whirlwind, To render His anger with fury, And His rebuke with flames of fire. For the Lord will execute judgment by fire. And by His sword on all flesh, And those slain by the Lord will be many. - Isaiah 66:15-16
There has been much rhetoric about a pending apocalypse. With each new catastrophic event, one can’t help but wonder; are these manifestations of some greater calamity?
The very nature of these events have taken on religious undertones. Whatever your faith, change is in the air. We can all see it. We can all feel it. Which begs the following questions:
What do world religions have to say about the apocalypse? What does modern meta-science have to say on the subject? Are there any common themes/trends?
